CRICKET hardman David Warner has shown his softer side, recounting the story of proposing to his partner Candice Falzon and breaking down in tears talking about the heartbreaking loss of his friend Phillip Hughes.

During an interview with 60 Minutes on Sunday, the 28-year-old batsman opened up about the death of Hughes, describing how he held his friend's hand on the want to the hospital.

Warner told of his devastation and how the tragedy left him bereft.

"I kept thinking 'why?'," he said. "Why did this happen in the game of cricket?".

Falzon described Warner as "a warrior" on the cricket pitch but "a softie" at heart.

The pair met after a rough period in Warner's life that involved a punch-up with England player Joe Root and an aggressive Twitter tirade against two sports journalists.

They are now parents to daughter Ivy Mae, a feeling Warner describes as "amazing".

The cricketer recalled his childhood growning up in the battler Sydney suburb of Matraville and how he would give the neighbours living next to his Housing Commission home hell by practising cricket endlessly.

Warner gushed about his bride-to-be, described by the show as "the woman who saved him" and told of popping the question in South Africa last year.

His initial plan was to organise a picnic on top of Table Mountain in Cape Town, but bad weather forced a re-think.

"Plan A wasn't going to go through and plan B was sunset on the balcony of the hotel overlooking the water," he said.

But first, he organised a romantic outing for Falzon, who was three months pregnant at the time.

"We went to a beach and we had this beautiful picnic that had all of this champagne and everything," she said. "Obivously I was pregnant so I couldn't drink. He was enjoying it, sitting on the beach and sipping champagne."

Later that evening as the sun went down, Warner finally got down on one knee and asked Falzon to marry him — sort of.

"Finally I came out to the balcony and I couldn't get the words out… I couldn't actually get the words out. Everyone said to me before (I'd) be that nervous."

It wasn't long ago that for both of them, the idea of marriage and children was the furtherest things from their minds.

"I'm just grateful for that opportunity to actually have Candice in my life, to be able to actually ask her. I never thought I'd ever get on one knee to anyone," Warner said.
