Gruesome details of the new execution process in Indonesia have emerged from sources on the prison island of Nusakambangan, based on how five people were shot after midnight on January 18.

When Bali bombers Amrozi, Mukhlas and Imam Samudra were shot by firing squad in late 2008, they were strapped to square wooden posts and stood on small podiums built into the base.

On the recent January round, four men from Brazil, Holland, Malawi and Nigeria were shot strapped to unsecured planks. An Indonesian woman who was shot with them was not planked.

According to sources, the hardwood teak planks stand about 2m tall and around 40cm wide.

The victims are given the option of wearing a hood, have their hands cuffed at the front, legs bound together, and bound to the planks with rubber strapping — something like tyre inner-tubing.

The planks are not fixed to the ground — the condemned people can actually shuffle on the spot, or could fall to the ground.

A source who was present at the shootings said all took long minutes to die after being shot through the heart.

He said the person who died the quickest was the only the woman in the group, Rani Adriani, declared dead after six minutes.

Adriani, 38, from Sukabumi in west Java, was not tied to a plank. She was so calm facing death authorities felt no need to bind her and she stood before the rifles unsupported.

A Muslim cleric who helped prepare Adriani — sentenced in 2000 for importing 3.5kg of heroin — for execution, earlier confirmed separately that she had died in a serene state.

"Rani was mentally strong," said Ustad Hasan Makarim, who was with her and Nigerian Denis Namaona until just before they were shot. "On the day she died, she was ready. She had given herself to God."

Island sources said Namaona — who had converted to Islam — was not buried deep enough. Shortly after his death, rumours swept the island's prisons that Namaona's apparition was stalking about.

A Muslim cleric was summoned who inspected Namaona's grave. It was found Islamic procedure had not been followed.

Namaona was disinterred and shifted to a new grave in a dragonfruit plantation on the island, this time pointing to Mecca.

A sixth victim, Vietnamese woman Tran Bich Hanh, was executed on January 18 in a different location in central Java. Her last request was that her hands not be cuffed.

On Saturday afternoon, President Joko Widodo was visiting a bird market in Jakarta where he was asked about his conversation with Tony Abbott last week about the Bali Nine on death row.

The Prime Minister said President Widodo told him he was "carefully considering Indonesia's position" on the executions, but the Indonesian leader said he remained firm.

LOOMING CONFUSION: Why it's so hard to get a straight answer about what's happening to the Bali Nine duo on death row

"I conveyed that Indonesia can understand the situation of Prime Minister Abbott," Tempo reported the President as saying. "But what is his interpretation, I do not know. Maybe my words are soft. Just see the action later."

Local Catholic priest, Charlie Burrows, who witnessed the executions of two Nigerian men on Nusakambangan in 2008, said one of them took seven minutes to die.
