ENGLAND is out of the World Cup and coach Peter Moores' job is under threat after a batting collapse gifted Bangladesh its first-ever berth in the knockout phase of the tournament.

A noisy crowd of 11,963 at Adelaide Oval witnessed England score 260 all out in 48.3 overs chasing ninth-ranked Bangladesh's 7-275.

The result was sealed when England No.11 James Anderson was clean bowled by Rubel Hossain, two balls after Stuart Broad suffered the same fate, sparking delirium among the Bangladesh players.

The run chase started brightly for England before losing Moeen Ali, run out for 19, and Alex Hales caught behind for 27.

Ian Bell was unbeaten on 63 at 2-121 after 26 overs as England moved into a strong position before paceman Rubel struck twice in four balls.

He removed Bell caught behind and skipper Eoin Morgan was caught at fine leg for a duck.

England's middle-order collapse extended to 3-11 in 22 deliveries when James Taylor was caught at slip for one at 5-132.

England are out of the world cup, and it's in part due to this controversial run out of Chris Jordan in their Cricket World Cup match.

Joe Root (29) sparked wild celebration among the Bangladesh players after he was caught behind off the bowling of Mashrafe Mortaza (2-48).

Jos Buttler (65) and Chris Woakes raised the hopes of England's fans with a 75-run stand.

Buttler and Chris Jordan, who was run out for a duck in controversial circumstances after his bat was grounded behind the crease but then appeared to bounce into the air, both departed in a thrilling 46th over.

England were off to a solid start until Moeen Ali was run out.

Needing 16 off the last two overs with two wickets in hand, England looked back in control after taking 15 off the 48th over.

Rubel (4-53) struck again, hitting Stuart Broad's off stump, at the start of the 49th over and bowling Jimmy Anderson two balls later to end England's woeful World Cup campaign.

Morgan was devastated in the post-match interview.

"Any day you get knocked out of a World Cup early is a pretty low moment," Morgan said.

"It's a pretty bad day.

"It's pretty dour to be honest. To be knocked out of the World Cup early when expectations were a lot higher, it's pretty poor."

Mahmudullah earlier became the first Bangladesh player to score a World Cup century as the Tigers feasted on a nervous England bowling attack to post a total of 7-275.

Bangladesh staged a dramatic recovery from 2-8.

Mahmudullah and his brother-in-law, the diminutive Mushfiqur Rahim (89) shared a 141-run partnership for the fifth wicket. Mahmudullah was run out for 103 in the 46th over at 5-240.

Jimmy Anderson (2-45) had put England on top early with the wickets of Imrul Kayes and Tamim Iqbal.

Soumya Sarkar (40) and Mahmudullah added 86 for the third wicket before Sarkar gloved a bouncer from Chris Jordan (2-59) through to the wicketkeeper Jos Buttler.

Mahmudullah Riyad has hit a historic century in Bangladesh's match with England. It's the first hundred at a Cricket World Cup by any Bangladeshi player.

Offspinner Moeen Ali took the vital wicket of Shakib Al Hasan caught at slip for two, but Rahim joined forces with Mahmudullah in the 22nd over to give Bangladesh's innings a solid platform for a late hitting assault.

England has one win and four losses and faces Afghanistan in a dead-rubber Pool A clash in Sydney on Friday.

Bangladesh has three wins and a washout from five games and has qualified for the knockout phase for the first time in a special moment for the Tigers.

Unbeaten New Zealand will host Bangladesh on Friday in Hamilton.
