RED cards, comical own goals, dubious goals, a fracas and a fan invasion — the seventh edition of the Sydney derby had it all as the Sky Blues came from behind to score a stirring win.

It was breathtaking virtually from beginning to end, justifying the hype that has seen this rivalry grow into one of the fiercest in Australia.

With the game hanging in the balance at 2-2, it was Sydney FC captain Alex Brosque, whose 79th-minute goal clinched the game and gave the Sky Blues bragging rights until the next derby encounter.

"It was a very physical battle, with both sides after bragging rights in the city," Brosque said. "But the crowd were unbelievable.

"I'd heard about, it but it certainly lived up to all the hype."

An incredible Sydney derby has produced five goals and a red card in front of a sell-out crowd at Allianz Stadium. And at the end of it all, it was the fans in Blue cheering loudest.

Flares, a provocative banner and a "stare-off" between the opposing teams set the tone for a deafening and fiery encounter in front of 41,213 fans.

The Sky Blues dominated early possession, which was to be expected, but it was the Wanderers who drew first blood when Mark Bridge latched on to a brilliant cross from the right by Dutch winger Romeo Castelen.

An epic Sydney derby on and off the field. With the fans providing plenty of colour, noise and atmosphere at a sold out Allianz stadium.

Sydney's defending was slack, but Bridge still had plenty of work to do and his clinical volley gave the visitors the lead in the 19th minute.

It got worse for the Sky Blues five minutes later, when Sasa Ognenovski miscued his clearance and goalkeeper Vedran Janjetovic somehow palmed the ball into his own net.

As far as own goals go, this was one of the more curious.

It raised the decibel levels of the Red and Black Bloc, while virtually silencing The Cove at the other end — the interaction between opposing fans proving an intriguing battle in itself.

Just as the Wanderers got comfortable with their lead, the free-scoring Corey Gameiro pulled one back after getting on the end of Brosque's excellent back-heel. The goal, scored only seconds before halftime, provided the home side with a crucial lift.

Sasa Ognenovski is under fire after slapping the back of Vitor Saba's head, after the Wanderers import had been sent off.

Sydney came out firing in the second half and created chaos for the Wanderers in their penalty area.

After several miscues and blocked shots, the second own goal of the game came from Castelen, whose touch left Covic wrong-footed and stranded.

Sydney FC captain Alex Brosque put in a man of the match performance in his first Sydney derby. He spoke to Tara Rushton about the atmosphere and the difficulty of the match.

For the second week in a row, the Wanderers' uncharacteristically leaky defence will be a major cause for concern for Tony Popovic.

But there was more worry to come when Saba — known to have a fiery temper — was shown a straight red for what the referee deemed to be a dangerous challenge on Terry Antonis.

It sparked a melee and Ognenovski may yet find himself in strife for a sneaky whack at Saba's head after the incident.

The Wanderers couldn't withstand Sydney's pressure with their 10 men and it was Brosque, set up by Gameiro, who snatched the home side's third and match-winning goal.

It capped a remarkable comeback for the home team and Sydney coach Graham Arnold says it was a memorable night.

"At the end of the day it's a great night for our fans," Arnold said.

"It's a wonderful occasion with a huge crowd, a record-breaking crowd, and to go 2-0 behind and send our supporters home with a 3-2 win, I think it will stay in the memory for a long time.

Sydney FC coach, Graham Arnold, speaks about the tactical evolution of his side throughout the clash with Western Sydney. Explaining how he adjusted Alex Brosque's position.

"Over 90 minutes we had 15 bad minutes and that's when we gifted them two goals, but for me the other 75 minutes was all us and I thought we played some real good stuff. The last three or four minutes I really enjoyed because the atmosphere was amazing."

For the Wanderers, it's the first time they have lost three A-League games on the trot, and also the first time they haven't won when leading 2-0.

Popovic couldn't hide his bitter disappointment.

"It's never nice to lose a derby and in the circumstances - overall disappointing," he said.

"It's hard to look for positives after the game. We had a player sent off, an injury - we lost a derby.

Western Sydney Wanderers coach, Tony Popovic, blamed 'poor officiating' for his side's 3-2 loss in the Sydney derby.

"So I'm not going to find too many positives right now, but when we review the game there were a lot of positives in that first half. Romeo had some good touches and so did Vitor and they will just get better.

Overall we're not pleased with the result, but that you would expect."
