Mother and three children shot dead near Boree Creek Rd Lockhart, police hunt on for missing father.

A WOMAN and three children were found shot dead inside a rural farmhouse in the state's south this afternoon.

Police and emergency services were called to the property in Lockhart, 80km west of Wagga, at about 3pm, where they discovered the body of a woman, two girls and a boy.

Police are yet to formally identify the victims but believe the woman was aged in her 40s and the three children were all aged under 10.

All four victims had suffered gunshot wounds.

Local police from Wagga Wagga established a crime scene at the Boree Creek Rd property and remained at the scene with homicide detectives.

Police are searching for a man in his 40s, believed to be the father of the children, who was missing from the house.

"Police from Wagga Wagga Local Area Command have established a crime scene which will be examined by specialist police throughout the night," a police spokesman said.

"While a post mortem will be conducted to formally establish the cause of their deaths, they are believed to have all suffered gunshot wounds.

"Police have grave concerns for a man, aged in his 40s, who remains unaccounted for. A search of the property is still being conducted."

Lockhart Deputy Mayor Rodger Schirmir said the tragedy had shocked the small shire numbering less than 3000.

He said the property where the shooting occurred was halfway between Lockhart and Boree Creek.

Mr Schirmir said he had unconfirmed reports of which family may be involved but would only say they are a "well-respected farming family".

"It's a terrible tragedy. I know everyone in this town so I am sure I will know them. The farm would be in lockdown," he said.

"The town is in shock that something of this magnitude had happened. It's huge. It's terrible (children were among the victims). It's frightful any community would be shattered."

Mr Schirmir said Lockhart was a "good little town and a great community".

"We are very close, good community that looks after each other," he said.

Mr Schirmir said the drought had put a lot of strain on farmers in the mainly grain and sheep town.

"Farming is pretty tough. Everyone would like to see some rain," he said.

Lockhart Mayor Peter Yates said the grain farming family had lived in the district a long time and the town was at a loss over the tragedy.

"It's been devastating, no one can understand it. It's mind boggling that these young lives could be cut so short. Everyone wants to know why," he said.

Mr Yates said Lockhart had only three police officers and it would have been horrific for them, along with other emergency service workers, to have attended the farmhouse where the four victims were found.

He said it had not been easy for farmers in recent years.

"We had the floods in 2010 and 2012 and in the last few years we have had devastating frost associated with the dry at crucial growing times," he said.

Mr Yates, who lives 50km from Lockhart in Yerong, said he would travel to the shell-shocked town of 1300 residents on Wednesday.
