That slow-motion, split-second moment when you drop your smartphone, watching helplessly as the screen — and your livelihood — smashes into pieces.

In fact, Perth man Jack Cooksey could have used this information before he dropped his prized iPhone in front of an audience of millions on Friday.

You see, a test of the iPhone 6 reveals there is little need for drop-phone-panic.

With this week's release of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, Android Authority took it upon themselves to test the durability of the devices ... and it turns out the they're sturdier than we may think.

Released three times from a distance high enough to cause damage, each experiment is filmed as the phone is dropped on its back, side and face.

With each drop, the phones escape with little damage barr a few scuffs.

No cracks. No breaks. No need for panic.

"No way, you have got to be kidding me," the narrator can be overheard after the final drop.

"The screen landed right flat on it, still works, perfectly fine, no cracks at all. Amazing."

"The new iPhones passed our drop test with flying colours. The glass on the front of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus is extremely solid, as the two frontal drops have proven."

More than 4 million pre-orders for the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus were placed the day they became available online last week, twice the volume Apple saw for the iPhone 5.

If supplies don't run out, analysts predict that Apple will sell more than 10 million iPhones this weekend, up from 9 million during the opening weekend for the iPhone 5s and 5c last year.

Australia was the first country to rollout the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus, where more than 1,400 people lined up outside Apple's flagship store in Sydney Friday morning.

Other markets launched Friday were Singapore, Britain, France, Germany, the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. Some 20 more countries will get the new iPhone from September 26.

Both new iPhones have larger screens in what some consider Apple catching up with the "phablet" trend pioneered by competitors.

The iPhone 6 has a screen of 4.7 inches and the 6 Plus is 5.5 inches, reflecting a growing preference for bigger displays, despite Apple's earlier vow to stick with the traditional size.

Main rival Samsung has long had a range of larger handsets, which are popular in Asia, and will soon release a new Galaxy Note 4 phablet.

Rod Chester tells you everything you need to know about Apple's latest products, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus.
