DARIUS Boyd sat alone inside his room at a private mental psychiatric hospital in Sydney's west with a journal and a pen.

The NRL star had just completed day one of his 21-day rehabilitation program, devised to change his life and help overcome what doctors had diagnosed earlier that morning, as adjustment depression.

Down the corridor from the gifted Newcastle, Queensland and Australian rugby league player were more rooms and more patients.

Some were as young as 22, others as old as 65. Everyone was different. Some required one-on-one therapy, others required shock treatment.

'This will be the best three weeks of my life,' Boyd scribbled into his journal.

For the first time in 27-years, Boyd was ready.

Ready to unravel the tangled web of pent-up anger derived from a troubled childhood which with every year has added another layer of torment for one of rugby league's most complex characters.
