FORMER US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has told ABC's 730 program of how she reacted to Julia Gillard's misogyny speech and her thoughts on sexism.

In her only Australian interview to talk about her new book, Hard Choices, Mrs Clinton described the former prime minister's speech in parliament as "striking".

"The overall impact I saw online of the speech that prime minister Julia Gillard gave about misogyny was very striking to me, because she did go chapter and verse," she said.

Mrs Clinton then went on to say she thought there was no place for sexism in politics around the world.

"I just don't think there's a place for sexism in our politics, and I think we should be purging those kinds of comments and holding ourselves to a higher standard."

While Mrs Clinton said progress had been made in the US and other countries, she said that there is still a way to go.

She emphasised that sexism should not be tolerated in any form, including "personal insults".

"It's a problem. I think we need to face up to it and we've made progress...but it just shouldn't be tolerated, and whether it takes a joke or a laugh or a direct confrontation to really put up a hand and say don't cross this line," she said.

"You can engage in debate with me, you can say you don't want to elect me, you can say I'm wrong on x, y or z.

"But don't inject some kind of personal insult or some rude remark about a characteristic related to my gender.

"Men come in all sizes and shapes, so do women, and it's about time we saw it for what it really is, just human nature and reality."

She also criticised the way Ms Gillard's political opponents characterised her in and out of parliament.

"That demeaned, just didn't seem to fit the Australia that I have come to know," she said.

Ms Gillard's misogyny speech in parliament was directed at the then opposition leader Tony Abbott.

But Mrs Clinton wasn't naming names when asked if she meant Mr Abbott when she was talking about the opponents who demeaned Ms Gillard.

"That's really for the Australian people to judge," Ms Clinton said.

Her comments on the ABC's 730 program come after Mrs Clinton condemned the "outrageous" misogyny faced by Ms Gillard in her book, as speculation grows about Mrs Clinton running for president of the United States in 2016.

In her book, she reflects on her answer to a question from a female student at a Korean university.

"I responded that I would guess many leaders choose to ignore the fact that they're dealing with a woman when they're dealing with me," she writes.

"But I try not to let them get away with that."

"Nonetheless, it's an unfortunate reality that women in public life still face an unfair double standard.

"Even leaders like former Prime Minister Julia Gillard of Australia have faced outrageous sexism, which shouldn't be tolerated in any country."

Then PM Julia Gillard swipes at Tony Abbott with cries of 'sexist' and 'misogynist' during a heated display in Parliament.
