GOLD Logie winner Scott Cam is not a man to baulk at a big challenge, but even TV's favourite chippie thinks producers and the new cast on The Block Glasshouse "have taken on too much" with the latest Channel 9 series.

Tasked with converting a 1980s office in the exclusive Melbourne shopping mecca of Prahran, the five teams of two — revealed for the first time today — are already knee-deep in redeveloping the three-storey, 3540-square metre building into five split-level atrium apartments, underground car parks and 70-metre lock-up storage units.

The former headquarters of communication technology company Vixtel, it was mocked up to look like a Channel 9 office block when the contestants were given the keys to the new TV conversion — expected to air after the current season of The Voice wraps.

Cam revealed "our contestants certainly struggle in the first four to five weeks and we've seen an unprecedented number of rooms just not finished in time for reveal day.

"Structurally there's an enormous amount of work that needs to be done before the contestants can even get cracking, which is ongoing," he said.

"I still think we have taken on too much, but I'll be proved wrong come auction day when we have some of the most phenomenal luxury apartments we have ever seen in the heart of Prahran.

On top of the living quarters, the couples must also work together to transform the ground floor into 254 square metres of retail and commercial space.

The scale of the project has been made even more difficult with budgets kept to the $100,000 limit (plus sponsor bonuses) of previous seasons.
