Two law enforcement officials told the AP that Tsarnaev and the other suspect, who was not immediately identified, had been living legally in the U.S. for at least one year.

An MIT police officer was shot dead in an incident that may be linked to the Boston marathon bombings.

Timothy Alban of the Massachusetts State Police urged the public to be patient.

The District Attorney has released a statement providing details about the events that led to the current situation.

After the fatal shooting of the police officer at MIT college earlier, two men were involved in a carjacking. They took a hostage for half an hour before dropping him unharmed at a petrol station.

The suspect's car, left, and a crashed police vehicle, right.

Police then began an intense hunt for the men, now confirmed as the Boston Marathon bombing suspects. The men threw explosive devices from the car as they were pursued in a dramatic chase through Watertown.

During this pursuit, the deceased suspect was critically injured and transported to hospital. He was declared dead on arrival.

The Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad is assessing all objects thrown from the vehicle during the chase, to determine whether they are explosive.

An extensive manhunt is ongoing for the second suspect.
