Previously unseen CCTV footage has been uncovered showing Jill Meagher's tragic last moments.

CHILLING new video of Jill Meagher's final moments show her alleged killer sprinting towards her, moments before her alleged rape and murder.

The video, obtained exclusively by the Herald Sun, can be revealed after Adrian Ernest Bayley faced court yesterday, pleading not guilty to murdering her.

Bayley will stand trial over Jill Meagher's alleged murder in a Brunswick laneway on September 22 last year as the Herald Sun can show chilling video of the accused sprinting toward her in her final minutes.

He pleaded guilty to one count of rape but faces trial over another two counts following his committal hearing.

In Bayley's record of interview - tendered in evidence - he told homicide detectives he had to take "responsibility" and thought the death penalty should be reintroduced.

"I hope they bring back the death penalty before I get sentenced,'' he told detectives.

"… But I've done. I've already done it. I can't – I can't do that again for what 20 years, 25 years. Nah. It's no life man. They should have the death penalty for people like me anyway.''

Bayley wept during his record of interview in which he made admissions.

The man accused of raping and murdering Jill Meagher will contest the charges at a committal hearing today.

He also told police he never meant to hurt Ms Meagher and had only stopped to talk to her and "help her" because she looked lost.

But she "flipped me off and that made me angry", Bayley said in his record of interview.

The new video shows Ms Meagher walking gingerly along Sydney Rd, Brunswick, after enjoying a night out with work colleagues.

Court report from Adrian Bayley committal

Dressed in a black coat, skirt and high heels, Ms Meagher appears to be on her mobile phone as she walks from right to left of screen.

Moments after she walks from view, a hooded-man, allegedly Mr Bayley, is seen sprinting along Sydney Rd in her direction, catching up with her outside the Duchess Boutique where CCTV footage of the pair was captured and released to the public by police last year.

The Herald Sun has been told the black-and-white footage, discovered by a Sydney Rd shop owner, was crucial to the investigation.

The search for Jill ends in tragedy

A packed Melbourne Magistrates' courtroom today heard graphic witness accounts of Ms Meagher's final moments.

There to witness the hearing included a brave Tom Meagher, who faced his wife's alleged killer.

Mr Meagher emerged from Melbourne Magistrates' courtroom 13 distressed during the morning session and stormed out after Bayley's not guilty pleas.

He was flanked by family and friends, including Ms Meagher's father and mother, George and Edith McKeon, and her brother Michael.

Witness Yuxiang He, who lives near the Hope St laneway where Ms Meagher was slain, told the court he heard a woman repeatedly yell: "Get out of there" in a sharp loud voice.

He said the woman sounded drunk and may have sworn, but thought the voice could have been an argument coming from another building.

Mr Bayley, dressed in black, sat in the dock behind protective glass as harrowing details of his alleged crimes were outlined.

In the front row, seated next to detectives, sat Ms Meagher's husband Tom, her brother Michael McKeon and her mother Edith and father George.

Mr Meagher left the courtroom early in the proceedings.

The court heard Mr Bayley accosted Ms Meagher and dragged her into a laneway at 1.38am on September 22 where he raped her three times and strangled her.

Chief Crown prosecutor Gavin Silbert, SC, said Mr Bayley killed Ms Meagher as she was the only witness to the crime.

Mr Silbert said Mr Bayley left Ms Meagher's body in the lane way and returned home where he collected a shovel and returned in his car about 4.20am.

He put Ms Meagher's body in the boot and drove her to Blackhill Rd in Gisborne South where he buried her, the court was told.

After his arrest, Mr Bayley made admissions to raping and strangling Ms Meagher and directed police to the body, Mr Silbert said.

The court heard Ms Meagher was strangled with "sustained force''.

Pathologist Dr Matthew Lynch said Ms Meagher was found lying clothed and on her left side.

He said he discovered haemorrhages and bruising on Ms Meagher's neck along with bleeding in neck muscles and fractures to her larynx.
