Warnie's wacky Ashes team

HAS Shane Warne finally lost the plot? He wants Australia to wrest back the Ashes with a team featuring just four recognised batsmen.

The legendary leg spinner named on Twitter 12 players that he thinks should tour England in July, and it features three all-rounders (not including Shane Watson), a wicketkeeper batting at No.5 and a bowler whose only international experience is one Twenty20 this summer.

Warnie starts off sensibly enough, putting Shane Watson back at the top of the order with David Warner.

Then it gets a bit odd.

Watson must open with Warner: Ian Chappell

At No.3 he has Shaun Marsh, who was dropped after failing in Australia's dominant series against India last summer and has averaged just 19 in Sheffield Shield this summer.

Then comes Michael Clarke at No.4, a no-brainer though some might think the best batsman in the side should bat first drop.

He's got wicketkeeper Matthew Wade batting at No.5, followed by three all-rounders (Moises Henriques, James Faulkner and Glenn Maxwell).

Haddin on standby for injured Wade

Nathan Coulter-Nile (who has taken 26 wickets at 30.46 in eight Shield games this summer) opens the bowling with James Pattinson.

The final bowling slot goes to either Peter Siddle or Nathan Lyon, presumably depending on whether the pitch will take spin (though those crueller than myself might say it doesn't much matter for Lyon).

What do you think of Warnie's Ashes XI? Have your say below.

There's no room in Warnie's side for any of the top five leading scorers in the Sheffield Shield this season, nor four of the five leading wicket-takers (Pattinson is the exception there).

Dropped from the current Australian squad are opener Ed Cowan, batsman Phil Hughes and bowlers Mitch Starc, Mitch Johnson and Xavier Dougherty.

Warnie's Ashes XI: Shane Watson, David Warner, Shaun Marsh, Michael Clarke, Matthew Wade, Moises Henriques, James Faulkner, Glenn Maxwell, Nathan Coulter-Nile, James Pattinson, Nathan Lyon/Peter Siddle.

Dumped Test spinner Nathan Lyon disagrees with coach Mickey Arthur that he needs to work on technical issues.
