MELBOURNE Stars captain Shane Warne has been suspended for one match and fined $4500 for his on-field fracas with West Indian Marlon Samuels at the MCG last night.

Warne faced a Cricket Australia hearing this morning where he fronted four serious charges from the fiery Big Bash League clash with the Melbourne Renegades.

Warne said he was "disappointed" after being handed the one-match ban.

He then made a brief statement before refusing to answer questions from the waiting media pack.

"I'm disappointed in some of my actions last night," Warne said.

"But also I'm pretty disappointed with the severity of the penalties too.

"I think that was pretty harsh."

After consulting with his team, Warne later tweeted that he would accept the ban.

"I have decided to accept my penalty of a 1 match ban," Warne wrote.

"Let's hope the boys can win tomorrow & we can make the semi finals..."

He then later learned that the ban means he cannot help the team from the bench.

"Just been told I'm not allowed to be anywhere near the ground or the team in the dugout. Only allowed to stay downstairs in the dressing room," he tweeted.

The Stars must beat the winless Sydney Thunder on Tuesday night to advance to the Big Bash finals.

Warne's charges and penalties:
* Rule 2.1: Show serious dissent at an umpire's decision - charge downgraded but Warne found guilty and fined $500.

* Rule 2.2: Engage in inappropriate and deliberate physical contact with other players or officials - Warne found guilty, fined $3000 and given one suspension point.

* Rule 2.5: Throw the ball at or near a player or official in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner - charge dismissed.

* Rule 2.6: Use language that is obscene, offensive or of a generally insulting nature to another player, official or spectator - Warne found guilty and fined $1000.

Earlier, Warne's Stars teammate Cameron White, one of three players charged from last night's fiery clash at the MCG, also faced a Cricket Australia hearing this morning.

White pleaded guilty and was fined $1000.

He left hurriedly and refused to talk to the large pack of assembled media gathered outside Cricket Australia headquarters.

White was charged with breaching Rule 1.2: Showing dissent at an umpire's decision.

Samuels has been charged with two alleged breaches:

* Rule 2.2: Engage in inappropriate and deliberate physical contact with other players or officials.

* Rule 6: Unbecoming Behaviour, namely that "players and officials must not at any time engage in behaviour unbecoming to a representative player or official that could (a) bring them or the game of cricket into disrepute or (b) be harmful to the interests of cricket.

Samuels was last night taken to hospital after a later separate incident in which he was struck by a bouncer and suffered what is believed to be a fractured eye socket.

His case will not be heard today given the severity of his injuries. He was not required to give evidence in the charges against Warne.

Samuels is recovering in the team hotel after copping a knock under his right eye after top-edging a Lasith Malinga bouncer into his head while attempting a hook shot.

Renegades coach Simon Helmot said: "Marlon is recovering in the team hotel and will be taking time off to care for his injury.

"We're now waiting for the swelling around his eye to subside before determining the full extent of the blow.

"You've got to feel for Marlon and we're continuing to do everything we can as a team to support him during his recovery."

Warne's Melbourne Stars lost to the cross-town Renegades, but the result of the match has paled into the footnotes today.

Warne made threatening remarks and gestures towards Samuels during the Renegades' innings, apparently in response to the West Indian's actions earlier while bowling when he held back Stars batsman David Hussey from a potential second run.

As soon as Samuels came to the crease in the ninth over of the run chase, Warne angrily yelled and gesticulated at him, saying "F--- you, Marlon" as umpires intervened.

The next over, Warne raced in to cut off a single and threw the ball into Samuels upper body, prompting an explosion of rage from Samuels, who hurled his bat down the pitch past Warne as players and umpires rushed in to diffuse the potentially explosive situation.

Later in the same over, Warne gestured furiously at the square-leg umpire when he ruled a wide from Clint McKay's bowling.

Warne seemed to be arguing the height of the ball, but for a split second there were memories of former Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy's famous throat-slitting gesture during the 2000 AFL season.

Hussey, visibly angry over the incident that sparked the furore, said after the match that Samuels "doesn't seem to make too many friends all around the world".

"He tried to block me to prevent me from taking a two, but in hindsight he probably prevented me from running myself out so it was probably a good thing," Hussey said.

"We tried to be very physical and have a bit of attitude out there and hit them hard with the ball."

"It probably did boil over a bit too much, but there was a home semi-final at stake, so we had to win."

Hussey said Samuels hadn't been a target for specific action.

"I guess he is one of their key players and if we actually nullify his existence throughout the game we go a long way to winning.

"With Shane, he hates losing and tonight it's evident in the dressing room.

"It was a really good chat we just had about turning up Tuesday night and putting a line in the sand and really turn it against the (Sydney) Thunder."

Renegades skipper Aaron Finch said he thought Samuels had become a target through the BBL after earlier being involved with controversies surrounding Brisbane coach Darren Lehmann and Adelaide boss Darren Berry.

"I don't know what it is. He is a very good player obviously and he's going to be out for the rest of the tournament with a broken eye socket," Finch said.

"I don't know what kicked that off to be honest. Warnie was talking about holding the man, I thought he was playing footy or something.

"I didn't notice anything (of the Hussey incident) ... at the non-striker's end they were in pretty close talking to him and they were all over him, but I don't really know what happened there.

"I just saw the aftermath of it, which probably didn't look good.

"But I think it was just two guys who got pretty worked up and it probably just boiled over a little bit.

"When you've got guys like that it can happen, but I thought the way the umpires handled it was very good."

Finch said the banter, especially among his regular Bushrangers teammates didn't "bother him at all".

"You are playing for an opposition side and you can be as furious as you want. They were actually into me for a while.

"(Stars bowler) Clint McKay actually shouted me breakfast so that was really nice of him," Finch joked.

"I think everything will be OK. Everyone's men out there and can handle a bit of banter."

Finch said Samuels enjoyed tough contests.

"He's a big, strong guy and loves the challenge. Unfortunately with the injury he has got I don't think he will be playing any further part in the competition," he said.

"It's going to be a huge loss. He is a world-class player and in the (World) T20 final he was man of the match so he's a guy who rises to the occasion.

"He was playing well and setting himself for a big innings and unfortunately that happened. We will have to regroup and assess where we go from now."
