A WOMAN died and her one-year-old granddaughter is in a serious but stable condition after the 63-year-old fell in a backyard pool while carrying the child in a baby pouch yesterday.
Police said the woman was having lunch at her daughter's Dapto home, south of Wollongong, when she left the dining table to go for a walk with her granddaughter.
About 10 minutes later her young grandson, aged under 10, found the pair floating in the water.
He went inside and his mother dragged them from the pool and called an ambulance.
"When the paramedics arrived they were able to revive the young girl but unfortunately the older woman had passed away," a police spokesman said.
"Crime scene officers and investigators have carried out a preliminary investigation and it appears to be a terrible accident."
He said the woman did have a medical condition and it's believed she suffered a heart attack or seizure and fell in the pool.
"We will not know what the exact cause of death is until a autopsy is completed and report forwarded to the coroner," the spokesman said.
"The pool was completely fenced with a secure gate."
The woman was fully clothed and police believe she was walking around the pool deck when the accident happened. The child remains in Wollongong Hospital.
