EVERYONE knows that awful feeling in the pit of your stomach after you drop your smartphone.

I doubt there is a person who isn't familiar with that moment of anxiety that occurs as you turn your phone over praying to the phone gods as you do, only to find the screen shattered and in pieces.

That's exactly what happened to journalist Andrea Smith.

"I actually heard the crunch as it hit the tile and saw the jagged crack on my screen," she wrote on Mashable.

Except, as it turns out, the phone was perfectly fine.

"...after weeks of agonising, my phone wasn't really cracked at all — just the screen protector was," she wrote.

"Thankfully, that thin, purple piece of glass saved my phone from the recycle bin."

Ms Smith had been using a purple rimmed screen protector called "Shell Shock" made by a company called Cellairis which claims its screen - made out of tempered, impact resistant glass - can withstand more pressure than a regular screen protector. And in this one disaster, the protector certainly lived up to its word.

"Although I didn't realise it was going to lay down its life to protect the phone, I certainly dodged a bullet," Ms Smith wrote.

So before you get all smug about your screen protector, remember that not all of them are the same. Some may only protect your phone from superficial damage, dust and scratches. Keep your phone safe and avoid dropping it. And for goodness sake, invest in a shock resistant screen protector.
