PM says nay to gay marriage

As I read the response, written and signed by senior adviser Mathew Jose on your behalf, I couldn't help but feel an overwhelming sense of disappointment.

I understand you've been busy lately; defending your judgement and credibility amidst the AWU scandal and dealing with that Negative Nelly Tony Abbott, while pledging $8 billion in funding (albeit unaccounted) for the National Disability Insurance Scheme, but I have to tell you, I'm a little miffed.

"As I'm sure you're aware, the Gillard Labor Government has a proud record of delivering reforms for the gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex (GLBTI) community that is unparalleled by any Government in Australian history, or any other party in the Parliament," it went.

Yes, I am aware.

Mr Jose then went on to remind me about the amendment of the 84 discriminatory laws against the homosexual community that your Government abolished, along with the changed rules for transgender and intersex passport holders who wish to nominate their preferred gender, for example.

But that wasn't the point of my letter, was it? I asked whether you would commit yourself to the plight of the gays, to finally undo the wrongs made by your forefathers and make same-sex marriage legal, once and for all.

"While the Government will not be introducing legislation to change the definition of marriage in the Marriage Act 1961, Labor Party members will be allowed a conscience vote when private members' bills proposing amendments to the Marriage Act to recognise same sex marriage come before the Parliament."

So, there we have it. Unfortunately, you're not the one to fly our flag and stand up for what's right, for the hundreds of thousands of people (yes, there's a few of us around) in this country who have been stripped of the choice to say, "I do", whether they would like to or not.

Your weak response on behalf of Mr Jose is simply not good enough. You have officially lost my vote, along with any parties you may align with now or in the future, until someone steps up and stands up .

Now that President Obama has won his second term, I can't help but wonder what might become of you in 2013, Prime Minister. Will the decisions you made in 2012 affect the attitudes of the public's vote? Time will tell.

The good news is that there is still time for change. I urge those members of the Labor Party to vote FOR an amendment to the Marriage Act when the time is right.

After more than 50 years, don't you think it's time for an update?

Prove the country - and your naysayers - wrong, for a change.
