JACINTHA Saldanha's ailing mother, Carmine, has been inconsolable and under heavy sedation since family members informed her of her daughter's tragic death this morning.

"She is heartbroken," Jacintha's younger brother, Naveen told The Times of India.

"We have kept her under sedation."

Previously family members said they had not told Carmine of Jacintha's passing due to health concerns for the elderly mother who has been suffering from heart problems.

In other developments today Mel Greig reached out to her supporters, thanking them for rallying behind her, but admitted nothing will ever take away the pain she's enduring.

The Sydney-based DJ said she has been touched by the outpouring of support from the Australian public as the ill-fated radio prank carried out by her and on-air cohort Michael Christian continues to make international headlines.

Greig, 30, is understood to be in a fragile state, devastated by the events of the past few days but wanted to make contact in particular with her hometown of Adelaide.

"Nothing will ever take away the pain I feel for Jacintha and her family but the one thing I've learnt from this situation is to use the support around you," she said.

Advertising to resume

Advertising will resume on 2Day FM on Thursday and all profits until the end of the year will be donated to a fund for Jacintha Saldanha's family.

Chief executive Rhys Halleran said: "We are very sorry for what has happened. It is a terrible tragedy and our thoughts continue to be with the family.

"We hope that by contributing to a memorial fund we can help to provide the Saldanha family with the support they need at this very difficult time."

The hospital that treated Prince William's pregnant wife Catherine says 2DayFM did not check with them.

Greig dumped as youth ambassador

Service to Youth Council (SYA) today terminated the appointment of Mel Greig as a Helping Young People Achieve (HYPA) Ambassador.

The organisation said the termination took effect immediately.

''This decision is most regrettable however events of the past week left SYC and HYPA with no other option,'' the oprganisation said in a statement today.

''SYC is grateful to Mel for her support of and contribution to the organisation during her time as an Ambassador."

2Day FM cancels Christmas Party

2Day FM owners Austereo cancelled the station's Christmas party today in the wake of the scandal

A $13,000 bar tab had been organised for between 200 and 250 of the company's Sydney employees, and was scheduled to take place at a Sydney nightclub this Thursday.

An Austereo spokeswoman said the party was cancelled out of respect for nurse Jacintha Saldanha and her family.

"This is no time for celebration at Southern Cross Austereo Sydney," she said.

Hospital denies attempts by 2Day FM to contact them

It comes as King Edward VII Hospital denied claims by Southern Cross Austereo that any attempt was made to contact senior managers at the hospital to seek permission to run the hoax call on radio.

"Following the hoax call the radio station did not speak to anyone in the hospital's senior management or anyone at the company that handles our media inquiries," the hospital said.

The Sydney station, 2Day FM, said it had tried to contact King Edward VII's Hospital five times to discuss the prank call conducted with two nurses, one of whom, Jacintha Saldanha, was found dead on Friday in a suspected suicide.

The two "shattered" DJs last night confirmed the decision to broadcast the fateful hoax call was "taken out of our hands."

It comes as Mr Saldanha's husband Benedict Barboza and his two teenage children came to London to formally identify her body, three days after inadvertently being involved in a hoax call from 2DayFM DJs.

The family met with hospital officials before travelling to Westminster for a meeting with prominent Indian community leader and MP Keith Vaz who had earlier been critical of the support they had been receiving.

Mr Barboza, clutching a photograph of his wife and surrounded by his 14-year-old daughter Leisha and son Junal, 16, could not speak to waiting media but through Mr Vaz said the close family was devastated by the loss of the 46-year-old wife and mother.

"They miss her every moment of every day," MP Keith Vaz said.

"They just want me to say that they are extremely grateful to the public here in the United Kingdom and throughout the world who have sent them messages of condolences and support following the death of Jacintha - a loving mother and a loving wife.

"This is a close family. They are devastated by what has happened. They miss her every moment of every day but they are really grateful to the support of the British public and to the public overseas for the messages of support and kindness."

Prime Minister David Cameron today described Ms Saldanha's death as "an absolute tragedy".

Asked about the incident at a Westminster lunch, Mr Cameron said: "I thought it was completely shocking, the news when I heard that about the suicide of this nurse, who worked incredibly hard and obviously was incredibly dedicated.

Police probe threatening 'Anonymous' video

A YouTube video threatening 2Day FM and its advertisers is being investigated by police.

The video, purporting to be from the vigilante "hacktivist" group Anonymous, was posted on December 8 by the An-onym Oz account.

Family of the nurse found dead after falling victim to a hoax phone call met with Labour MP Keith Vaz in Westminster.

It features a character wearing a Guy Fawkes-style mask and making threats against 2Day FM and its advertisers - including hacking their databases.

"We have listened to your excuses," the character says via a voice synthesiser.

"We have heard the word 'prank' a million times, we have studied the facts and found you guilty of murder."

It adds: "You have placed your advertisers at risk - their databases, their websites, their online advertising."

A formal complaint has been made to the police and 2Day FM has taken extra precautions to protect both its staff and computer systems in the wake of the video.

A message posted by YouTube said the video was removed because it violated "YouTube's policy on depiction of harmful activities".

UK media not convinced hosts are sorry

It comes as some British media responded with some cynicism to the apology made by DJs Mel Greig and Michael Christian, which has received saturation coverage in the UK.

"Grovelling" was how the big selling Daily Mail and The Sun websites saw the interview of the pair while BBC TV highlighted how ethics of the prank "didn't seem to bother them" as they replayed elements of the interviews the Aussie pair gave Australian TV.

Speaking about when they first found out about the tragedy that followed their prank call, the 2Day FM hosts broke down on A Current Affair. Vision courtesy of Channel 9.

While the notorious British newspapers had given the news of the royal pregnancy and subsequent apparent suicide of Jacintha Saldanha wide coverage earlier in the week, the prank call was granted subdued coverage, perhaps the Leveson inquiry into culture and ethics of the press having an effect as well as two other unrelated significant news stories including the arrest of a BBC star.

But it largely left it up to their associated websites to post the prank call audio link and then republish the best of the worst online posts and Twitter feeds of the various threats and abuse leveled against the Australian radio pair.

Now it appears it is open warfare with the on-air apology by DJs Mel Greig and Michael Christian given significant coverage as well as, ironically, criticism of the British press coverage by the Australian press.

DJs devastated by Ms Saldanha's death

The distraught radio presenters offered an emotional apology to the family of UK nurse Jacintha Saldanha, who is thought to have taken her own life after last week connecting the syndicated Sydney radio program's call to another nurse caring for the Duchess of Cambridge.

A tearful Greig told Seven's Today Tonight she would face Ms Saldanha's partner, Benedict Barboza, daughter Lisha and son Junal at any coronial inquest into the 47-year-old's death if it helped the grieving family "get some closure."

Greig's first thoughts: 'Was she a mother'

"If we played any involvement in her death, then we're very sorry for that. And time will only tell,'' she said.

"We're incredibly sorry for the harm that we may have helped contribute (to),'' said Christian, adding he felt "gutted, shattered and heartbroken''.

But Austereo boss Rhys Holleran has been challenged to justify why his network put the Greig and her co-host up for media interviews after her family had raised concerns for her mental health.

The chief executive said the interviews with Nine's A Current Affair and TT were "something they felt strongly they wanted to do".

"They feel great sadness, it was their decision," Mr Holleran said.

"We took into account the views of the professionals we've had helping these young people. We took all of that into account."

He denied the network had breached Australian Communications and Media Authority guidelines.

"We had a process and procedure in place, we followed those procedures and part of that was a legal review," Mr Holleran said.

"As an organisation, we believe we've done what was necessary ...".

The presenters' fragile state was obvious during questioning by Nine's Tracy Grimshaw and Seven reporter Clare Brady, who each taped 15-minute interviews with them at Austereo's Sydney headquarters yesterday.

Pushed to explain the process which saw the recorded prank call vetted and cleared for broadcast, Christian would only say "people far above us" were left to approve the exchange between Greig, posing as the Queen, and another unknown nurse, who explained the condition of the pregnant royal.

"I'm 100 per cent honest in saying I'm, we're, not privy to what happens with this call, mind you, this call is no different to what happens with anything else, you know, regardless of the content or the context or what's been recorded, it's the same, it's the same process and I'm certainly not aware of what filters it needs to pass through. All we know is it's passed on and then we're told either yay or nay," he said.

Greig said: "It's not up to us to make that decision. We just record it and then it goes to the other departments to work it out. I don't know what they then do with it. We just do what we do, which is make those calls."

As the international backlash continued, threats made by online hackers to shut down the station's cyber systems were of little worry, Greig said.

"There's nothing that can make me feel worse than what I feel right now. And for what I feel for the family. We're so sorry that this has happened to them," she told TT, crying.

Asked if she wanted to send a message to the bereaved family, Greig said: "I've thought about this a million times in my head that I've wanted to just reach out to them and give them a big hug and say sorry and I hope they are okay, I really do."

"There's not a minute that goes by that we aren't thinking about her and her family and the thought that we might have played a part in that is gut-wrenching."

While Ms Saldanha, known to work colleagues and friends as Jess, was being mourned around the world, her ailing mother was not even aware of her daughter's death.

Earlier The Times of India said family members had chosen not to inform Carmine Saldanha of her daughter's passing because she was suffering from heart problems and was under sedation.

Britain's Daily Mail reported the beloved nurse and mother had "died of shame".

The Mail quoted her brother Naveen as saying: "She would have felt much shame about the incident."

The prank call to the switchboard of King Edward VII hospital in London, where Prince William's wife was being treated for severe morning sickness, had been an "innocent idea," the radio pair said.

Faking a British accent, Greig posed as Queen Elizabeth and was transferred promptly by Ms Saldanha to a ward nurse, who then conveyed details of the royal patient's condition.

Christian said the joke "was meant to be on us," the Summer Hot30 team expecting to be hung up on or reprimanded by hospital authorities.

"The call to begin with wasn't about speaking to Kate. It wasn't about trying to get a scoop or anything. The call was just, I mean we'd assumed that we'd be hung up on and that'd be that."

Greig added: "You know it was designed to be stupid. We were never meant to get that far (with) the little corgies (colleagues) barking in the background. We obviously wanted it to be a joke."

Her co-star said: "There was no malice in the call. There was no digging. There was no trying to upset or get a reaction."

Meanwhile, Communications Minister Stephen Conroy described the radio hoax as "tragic" and confirmed ACMA was taking the unusual step of talking directly to 2DayFM.

The media watchdog normally waits for listeners to make complaints and only becomes involved if they remain unresolved.

2DayFM would not comment on reports it had already received more than 1000 complaints.
