A YOUNG boy who was struck down and killed by a car this morning was on his way to school with his mother.

The five-year-old was crossing Vivienne St at Kingsgrove Rd with his mother and up to three other young children when he was hit by the Audi Q5 about 8:40am.

Witnesses to the accident described a scene of overwhelming sorrow as the boy's mother, passers by and the driver of the Audi desperately called for help and tried to render assistance.

"I saw the kid down... I heard the mother she was just crying, screaming," witness Nick Tserpes, 70, whose home sits on the corner of Vivienne St said

"Everybody was just crying, I was crying too... It was just terrible."

The accident happened just 300m from Kingsgrove Public School and metres away from the start of a school zone.

Crash investigators remained at the scene for several hours examining the car involved and a pram, full of food and other items, that was being wheeled by the boy's mother.

She was taken to St George Hospital suffering shock and remains in a state unfit to be interviewed about the accident, police said.

It's believed the Audi, driven by a 42-year-old woman from the Kingsgrove area, was travelling at low speed as it attempted to negotiate a turn onto busy Kingsgrove Rd, which is a 50km/h thoroughfare.

The Department of Education released a statement this morning on behalf of the Kingsgrove Public School saying counselling services were being made available.

"The school has extended its sympathy to family and friends following this tragic accident," the statement said.

"Counselling has been made available at the school to students and staff."

Chief-Inspector Mark Cook, of the Police Transport Command, said the accident was an absolutely tragedy, particularly in the leadup to Christmas.

"I've seen too many of these over my career, my personal view is that it's distressing for everyone involved - including police," Chief-Insp Cook said.

"I'm told the driver was extremely distressed and distraught."

Some parents have arrived at Kingsgrove Public School after reading reports of the accident to pickup their children and take them home.

One mother spoken to by The Daily Telegraph said she was doing so as a precaution as her young daughter was not yet aware of what had occurred.
