Cancer boy dies in crash after surgery

A BOY, aged 10, who has cancer, was on his way home after having a tumour removed from his brain, when he was killed in a car crash.

Jack Reich, a longtime official and former president of North Dakota Stockmen's Association, was driving his family home after picking his son Vander from Saint Marys Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota.

His Chevy Surburban collided head-on with a pickup truck on Highway 14 near Dodge Centre, Minnesota. Mr Reich and Vander were killed, along with pickup truck driver, Scott Hodgman of West Concord, the New York Daily News reported.

"This is such a tragedy. They are such good-hearted people, the salt of the earth; such good, good people," Stockmen's Executive Vice President Julie Ellingson told The Bismarck Tribune.

"I wish they could have played out the rest of their story here on Earth. Vander loved to be alongside his dad with the cattle and the horses."

Ms Ellingson said the boy's tumour was diagnosed on October 22 and the surgery was scheduled almost immediately. His father, along with his mother Mardee, were bringing him home to recuperate before he began treatment later this month, she said.

Mardee Reich was seriously injured and has been flown back to Saint Mary's Hospital.
