THE Upper House MP who called a woman a "porn star" on Facebook has apologised for the post.

Labor MP Amanda Fazio updated her Facebook at a parliamentary ball last week and said Nationals MP Geoff Provest's partner looked like a "retired B-grade porn star".

"I am deeply sorry for the comments I made on Facebook and the hurt and offence they have caused," Ms Fazio said in a statement.

"The comments were wrong and completely unacceptable. I apologise unreservedly to Ms Hamilton and Mr Provest."

Labor leader John Robertson issued a statement on Twitter denouncing Ms Fazio's description of Mr Provest's partner Elizabeth Hamilton.

"Comments reported in Tele today from Amanda Fazio towards Geoff Provest's partner are inappropriate AND offensive. There's no place for it," Mr Robertson said.

Ms Hamilton, Mr Provest's partner of four years, said the description of her was insulting.

She was a guest of Mr Provest at the annual parliamentary Spring Ball, and was wearing a blue, floor-length evening gown.

Ms Fazio, who was also at the event, posted to her 135 Facebook friends: "At the NSW Parliament Spring Ball. Excellent singers from Bankstown Talent Program. Geoff Provest has a date that looks like a retired B-grade porn star,"

Trish Marinozzi and two others "liked" the comment, with Kashif Amjad responding: "how do you know what a porn star looks like". Ms Fazio replied: "I know due to my extensive research into the adult industry. When I show you the photo there will be no doubt".

Prime Minister Julia Gillard and federal Labor have repeatedly attacked the Coalition for "misogyny and sexism" in recent weeks.

Mr Provest said yesterday he was shocked by the posts and government sources said he was distressed when he had to call his partner of four years, Gold Coast businesswoman Elizabeth Hamilton, to inform her of Ms Fazio's remarks.

"I'm not even going to comment on it. I just think it's so deplorable it's not worth commenting on," he said.

Premier Barry O'Farrell said the comments were disgraceful in light of the ongoing federal sexism debate sparked by Ms Gillard's fiery spray in parliament in which she accused Tony Abbott of being sexist and a misogynist.

"I am disgusted and appalled by these comments particularly given the tone of the national debate of the last fortnight," he said.

Ms Fazio was yesterday back-pedalling from the insulting remarks and denied the existence of any photographic proof saying the second post "was just an off-hand comment". "The (first) post was probably more a comment on style of dress, which if it causes any offence I will apologise," she said.

"In hindsight - with the benefit of hindsight - I would not have made them and If they have caused any distress I am deeply sorry and have deleted them from Facebook."

Ms Fazio was suspended from the ALP in October 2010 after becoming the first government MP in 13 years to cross the floor - in support of pornography sellers.

It is understood Ms Hamilton chose a blue, full-length floral evening gown because it was a spring ball.
