SEA Eagles youngster Jason Annear repeatedly asked friends for a ride home from the club's presentation dinner shortly before falling to his death.
As police and family members inspected the scene of the 21-year-old's fatal plunge yesterday, The Daily Telegraph learnt more details of Annear's movements before the tragedy.
A close friend confirmed the final calls and text messages from Annear's mobile phone early on Saturday morning were requests for a lift back to his Collaroy home from Manly Corso, where Sea Eagles players kicked on after their awards dinner.
It's believed the calls were made about 2am as the 21-year-old could not afford a taxi.
Still wearing his suit from the dinner, Annear fell 15m to the bottom of a cliff overlooking Freshwater Beach some time before dawn.
The scene of his death is about 3km north of the Corso and well off the most direct route to Collaroy.
Police have concentrated inquiries on a multi-storey apartment on Pavilion St in Queenscliff, directly above the spot where Annear's body was found on Sunday afternoon.
Attempts were made to interview all residents on Sunday and Monday, while officers and the police helicopter returned on Tuesday.
Also on the scene was Annear's father Craig, as well his brother.
A passer-by saw police escort Mr Annear down an adjacent driveway, which ends in a scalable blue wall that overhangs the cliff.
Two young women - one of whom was extremely distraught - also arrived with a bunch of flowers.
With the Coroner's report still being prepared, club officials are yet to comment. But Annear's NSW Cup coach and club great Cliff Lyons expressed his shock.
"I was spoke to Jason at the function and he was in really good spirits," Lyons said. "He was talking about how much he was looking forward to next season."
