DANIELLE Spencer's dancing partner Damian Whitewood has flatly denied being "the other man" involved in the marriage breakup between the actress and her husband Russell Crowe.

Asked on Today Tonight if he was involved with Spencer, Whitewood said: "Never have been, never will be".

Rumours of Whitewood's potential involvement in the breakup have abounded since earlier this week when it emerged the couple had been drifting apart for the past year.

Whitewood has denied any involvement.

"She lives in Sydney. Those photos were taken in Melbourne. That's false straight away. Staying the night with her - that's another false accusation. We all actually stay in the same hotel, everyone's there," Whitewood said.

He was photographed with his arm around Spencer in a casino earlier this year.

"We console each other - we do that on the show as well," he said. "You don't know what we were saying to each other. It's a photo that says I had my arm around her, but I had my arm around her every day when I danced with her. I was probably in worse situations in front of millions of viewers."

Having remained silent since Monday's reports revealing he has split from Spencer, Crowe yesterday showed his estranged wife is still in his thoughts.

Four days after he appeared on the bill at New York's Gramercy Theatre along with his colleague Alan Doyle on Saturday night, Crowe has sent Spencer a public cheerio.

In a Tweet sent yesterday the actor wrote: "The Indoor Garden Party had performers from England,Ireland,Sweden,Newfoundland,Canada,US,NZ,Australia, all missed the girl from Rose Bay."

The girl from Rose Bay being, one would assume, Spencer.

Neither Crowe nor Spencer have publicly commented on their split although Spencer's father Don has told Australian television this week that he was "sad" about the break-up.

The couple have been living apart all year with Crowe's acting commitments keeping him abroad while Spencer has remained in her $10 million Rose Bay home with the couple's two sons, Charlie, and Tennyson, 6. They were seen together in August.

Dancing friend a shoulder for Danielle

His tweet comes after The Daily Telegraph revealed Spencer wanted a friend - not a boyfriend - to help with the "loneliness" of having a husband living overseas.

And she found one in her Dancing With The Stars partner Damian Whitewood.

As the Perth-born, LA-based ballroom dancer bore the blame for the breakdown of Spencer and Crowe's nine-year marriage yesterday, a close friend of Whitewood insisted his so-called "affair" with the singer-songwriter was purely emotional.

"They were mates and they were close and that's the truth," the insider said.

"I guess you could say they 'dated' but when I say that I mean they went out to dinner and for drinks and just had fun. I think she was lonely and that she liked the company of having a man in her life again. A man-friend, that is. Not a boyfriend."

Crowe and Spencer are said to have been keeping separate homes in Sydney for a year, with the Oscar winner shooting back-to-back films overseas for most of the past 18 months.

The source maintained the proof of the friendship between Spencer and Whitewood was in the intimate pictures of them at The Star casino in June, which sparked speculation Spencer and Crowe had separated.

"Do you think they look like a couple? I don't. I think they are two people very used to each other (that are) just hanging (out) at a bar and ordering a drink," the friend added.

Whitewood - who regularly posted happy snaps of himself and Spencer on Twitter - played down the claims of a romance on the social media site yesterday.

"Wow! Sad and crazy news day full of rumours I didn't ask for!" he wrote. Whitewood broke up with his girlfriend, fellow pro dancer Peta Murgatroyd, earlier this year.

Fellow DWTS star Luda Kroiter said that she "didn't see anything between (Spencer and Whitewood) while we were filming". "Dancers are generally comfortable standing in close proximity to people. More so than others," Kroiter said.

"(Working) on the show you are basically with this person for 16 weeks so I guess that's how a connection is easily made."

Crowe - yet to comment on the break-up - also returned to Twitter yesterday, but stuck to the topic of his workouts.

A source from the New York set of the new film Noah told the Chicago Sun Times yesterday Crowe "never mentioned his wife once" but talked about his two sons, Charles and Tennyson, 'all of the time'.
